COMMON USES:
Valerian is an herb known as a nervine, as it acts on the nervous system. It is commonly used to combat ADHD, anxiety, chronic fatigue, depression, and insomnia, increase deep sleep and general rest, and to provide overall relaxation. Valerian has been shown to decrease the amount of time it takes a person to fall asleep to just 15-20 minutes. Valarian is used to assist women with dysmenorrhea (heavy bleeding during menses).
In menopausal women, current research indicates a dose of 225 mg three times daily taken for 8 weeks can reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes.
600 mg daily for 7 days has been shown to reduce mental stress, including reducing blood pressure, heart rate, and feelings of pressure under stress.
100 mg taken before speaking in front of a public audience has been shown to reduce stage fright and feelings of anxiety when performing in front of others.
Pairs with lemon balm, but don't take doses larger than 1080 of valerian and 720 mg of lemon balm, as this tends to have a reciprocal effect and actually can cause anxiety.
Limited studies show valerian may be effective in treating convulsions, including epilepsy and minor tremors, but further research is needed in this area.

Nervine.
